Intro
Running a school means carrying enormous responsibility for the safety of staff, pupils, and visitors. The law requires every school to appoint a Competent Person to help manage health and safety. This isn’t optional – it’s a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

This person should be formally qualified and a member of a suitable trade body such as IOSH.

What the Law Says
“Every employer shall appoint one or more competent persons to assist them in undertaking the measures they need to take to comply with health and safety law.”
(Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Regulation 7)

For schools, this means the Headteacher, Governors, or Trust must ensure that someone with the right knowledge, qualifications and experience is advising on health and safety matters.
